Wanderlei "The Axe Murderer" Silva Defeats Jackson

Dana White On Wanderlei Silva: It May Be Time For Him To Retire

After being knocked out cold by Chris Leben at UFC 132, Wanderlei Silva may have some decisions to make about where his career will go from here and if UFC President Dana White has a say in the matter, he'll likely push for the "Axe Murderer" to hang up the gloves following this latest knockout:

"People love him so much because of the way he fights and his style and the type of person he is, but yeah, (it's) probably the end of the road for Wanderlei," White told MMA Junkie. "I think it's one of those ones where I'd like to sit down and talk to him and kind of Chuck Liddell him into it. I think the guy has nothing left to prove."

SPARTAN!

UFC 132 Middleweight Showdown: Wanderlei Silva vs. Chris Leben

Among the many MMA personalities that have, throughout the years, captured our imagination and made loyal followers of us all, Wanderlei Silva still remains a fan favorite even after frequently long absences from the Octagon.

A native of Curitiba, Brazil, the “Axe Murderer” entered the professional fighting scene at the age of 20 in the Brazilian Vale Tudo Fighting organization, knocking out his opponent via strikes. In subsequent years, Silva gained notoriety for his hard-nosed brawling style and the viciousness of his strikes, steadily climbing the fighting ranks from contender to IVC light heavyweight champion and dominant PRIDE Middleweight champion.

Ranked as one of the world’s best Middleweights, Silva has yet to earn a title in the UFC, arguably the biggest MMA organization in the world today. Slated to fight against fellow brawler Chris “The Crippler” Leben in UFC 132, Silva will be returning to the Octagon after an absence of one year and five months. During his fighting hiatus, Wanderlei underwent a knee surgery and was originally scheduled to make his return in UFC 130 taking on ex-WEC champ Brian Stann. Silva was eventually replaced by veteran Jorge Santiago, after the Brazilian expressed his hesitancy to face Stann. His reluctance to fight though has perhaps disillusioned many Silva fans and created doubts in their mind as well as questions that need answering.

Though only at the age of 34, Silva’ s body has arguably gone through lots of punishment throughout the years, mainly due to the Brazilian’s in-ring aggressiveness and his habitual “throwing caution to the wind” style, and even after pulling out a unanimous win over Michael Bisping, Wanderlei Silva looked spent. The fight against Leben on July 2, 2011 is perfect stylistically for both Silva and Leben as both are raging strikers out to prove their critics wrong. Leben, a fighter seemingly incapable of being put away, is coming off of a KO loss to Brian Stann in UFC 125 and will surely be out for blood.

Will Silva be able to shake off his ring rust and exhume his “murderous” instincts to put the axe to Leben and become the third man to knock Leben out?

One thing is for sure: If the two strikers do pull the trigger on each other, the fans are guaranteed a fight of the night match well worth its money.

Brock Lesnar Has Successful, UFC Hopes To See Him Back By Early 2012.

UFC President Dana White revealed during UFC 130 festivities over the weekend that former UFC Heavyweight Champion Brock Lesnar had successful surgery on Friday that will hopefully put an end to stomach problems that have hampered his career over the last few years.

“Brock Lesnar actually had surgery yesterday,” White revealed. “They removed about 12 inches of his colon, repaired it, he feels great. He said he’s a little sore, but the operation was a huge success.”

“We’re hoping he can be back by the first of the year,” White stated.

Lesnar was forced to pull out of a scheduled June clash with Junior Dos Santos following a stint as coach on The Ultimate Fighter but a second bout of diverticulitis put him on the shelf.

Mirko Cro Cop Will Fight One More Time In The UFC

With one fight left on his UFC contract, Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic will fulfill his end of the deal and will step into the cage one more time, likely the last of his career.

UFC President Dana White confirmed the news this week when he told MMAFighting.com that the UFC would offer Cro Cop one more bout to close out the deal. When and where the fight will take place wasn't announced.

The once feared Croatian has lost his last two fights inside the UFC's octagon getting knocked out in both, by Frank Mir and Brendan Schaub.

Brock Lesnar Disappointed, Mentally And Phyiscally Strained

A second bout with Diverticulitis has put Brock Lesnar's career on hold as he battles the same disease that put him on the shelf in 2009 and talked to Mauro Ranallo about the difficulties he has been going through since being forced out of a June bout with Junior Dos Santos and a possible shot at the UFC Heavyweight Title:

“Yeah, I’m very disappointed. This has not only mentally but this has been very physically strenuous on me, since my first bout with Diverticulitis in 2009. Having to back away from a fight is not something that I think anybody likes to do, surely me. The first time it happened to me and to fall under the same circumstances, I thought I had this thing beaten and I’m very disappointed but getting past that and understand that my health is very important. I got another doctor’s appointment on Thursday and a consultation where we’re going to go over and just try to figure out the best approach to try to handle this and it may be surgery and it may be not. We’re reviewing other options here to try to help me but, I want to get back into the Octagon sooner than later.”

Antonio McKee Feels He May Have Rubbed The UFC The Wrong Way

After suffering his first loss in eight fights at UFC 125, Antonio McKee received his walking papers in his first outting for the company after signing a four fight deal.

So where did it all go wrong and why did McKee get cut after when loss when there are fighters on multiple loss streaks right now in the UFC?

McKee spoke to Sherdog.com this week about getting cut and what he felt was the deciding after for the promotion:

“You just don’t bring a guy that far and just cut him on a split decision. I just didn’t understand that. That hurt more than anything. OK, now I made it, and then you cut me on a split decision? It just wasn’t fair to me when I’ve seen some of the guys in the UFC that have a really, really, really long streak of losses.

"I think they were expecting a little bit more from me as far as directly connecting with Dana White and Joe Silva. Because Joe Silva said something to me before the weigh-ins.

He came up to me and he goes, ‘Aren’t you going to thank me?’ I didn’t quite really understand what he was talking about. I was like, ‘What do you mean?’ And he goes, ‘I heard that you said I f--ked up letting you in the UFC.’ I’m like, ‘What are you talking about?’ So after the weigh-ins and I ate, that was really heavy on my mind because he struck that conversation with me. So then I remember an article or an interview that I did and I said, ‘Oh yeah, Joe Silva’s f--ked up now; McKee’s in the UFC.’ "He took that in a derogatory form. I didn’t mean it like that. … I think a lack of communication, a misunderstanding -- I may have rubbed Joe Silva the wrong way. I don’t know.”

Frank Mirs thoughts on UFC 119.

I know its a little late but here you guys go.
About My Post Fight Comments:
After the fight I was really critical of myself, when I got home and watched the fight I would have to say that my performance was not as bad as I originally thought.
During the fight I put constant pressure on Mirko and totally neutralized his game plan.
The part I was upset about was my takedowns, I was making mistakes I was not making a month before the fight, so I still have work to do there. That being said the way I utilized the cage was no different than other fighters that are successful so I don’t get all the backlash.
During the fight I never gave up, I was always looking for an opening and once I saw the opportunity, I seized it, and knocked him out.
About the Commentating
When I hear the commentating about how I should have pulled guard that’s just ridiculous. I’ve been in the UFC for a while now, and I know how scoring works. If I pulled guard and could not obtain a submission that’s really good for Mirko and bad for me in the judges eyes.
I felt I was winning the fight and in my opinion the fighter that’s losing should be the one that should try and take more risks.
Not Receiving Knockout of the Night
It is not my job to dictate bonuses. I did finish the fight with a pretty nice Knock Out when the opportunity presented itself. Of course I thought I was going to receive it, I had the only KO of the night, and it was over a major striker.
Dana’s remarks on Performance
Dana is my boss and he has the right to make any comments he likes about the fight. All I can say is there were two fighters in the cage, and I feel I was the one engaging. I am a Martial Artist that fights using technique and try not to let emotion or crowds dictate how I fight. I feel my performance and conditioning were great for this fight other than my takedowns, and I’m working on them constantly.
Dana’s remarks on Heart
Once again Dana has the right to say whatever he likes. If I had no heart I would have stopped fighting after my accident in 2004. Instead I came back and won another title and I will win the title again.
What’s Next
If I had my choice I want to fight the loser of Lesnar and Velasquez.

Brock Lesnar has shocked the world by beating some of MMA’s best heavyweight fighters. No one can argue that a huge part of Brock Lesnar’s success has been pure strength and quickness. Five Worthy Foes For Georges St. Pierre.

By now it’s no secret that Georges “Rush” St. Pierre has proven king of the welterweight mountain. From Jon Fitch to BJ Penn, and damn near every legitimate welterweight contender to speak of, St. Pierre has disposed of the division’s upper echelon. However, times are changing, and new threats are emerging.

While I’m inclined to include a rematch in this list, make no mistake, there is fresh blood in the division that may be able to cause St. Pierre to stumble.

It takes a certain skill set and demeanor to oppose the champion, and I believe we’re seeing an influx of the perfect competitors to shake things up in St. Pierre’s perfectly successful world.

5. Jon Fitch:

Fitch is the only man to make this list to have already shared cage time with the dominant champion. While Fitch was thoroughly outclassed, he refused to succumb to the champion’s onslaught, and sought to win the fight, even the face of utter destruction. Fitch is, in my personal opinion, still improving. He’s also one of the extremely few welterweights that can match GSP’s cardiovascular level.

A different game plan will no doubt be required if Fitch hopes to find more success than he managed at UFC 87, but Jon is an intelligent fighter, and I find it unlikely that he’ll attempt the same failing game plan twice. Major adjustments need be made, but Fitch is the owner of determination and grit; two things that may leave GSP a bit befuddled.

4. Carlos Condit:

Condit sure doesn’t appear the menace to dethrone St. Pierre, but looks can be awfully deceiving. Condit’s greatest weapon is his ruthlessness inside the cage. You can control Carlos, you can pound on Carlos, but if Carlos has the opportunity to unleash a barrage of strikes, believe he’s aiming for the jugular, and he’s got enough power to render just about any man at 170 pounds unconscious.

The interesting element of this potential clash however, lies within the grappling sure to unfold. Condit’s wrestling is far from his strong point, and he’s been known to be susceptible to elite wrestlers. That said, he’s got an extremely dangerous guard and extremely slick sweeps. If a submission window opens, “The Natural Born Killer” will leap through.

3. Anthony Johnson:

There’s no denying that “Rumble” is still rough around the edges. There’s refinement to be made still, but there’s promise that very few athletes possess; this man could develop into St. Pierre’s physical equal, as outlandish as that sounds.

Johnson’s striking is particularly lethal; he’s fast, powerful, and extremely rangy for a welterweight. He’s proven time and again that he’s more than capable of rendering opponents unconscious with fist or foot. He’s also the owner of an impressive wrestling pedigree. Though much more effective on the offense, he’s developing defensive wrestling skills constantly.

In a year, “Rumble” may be the one to equal GSP’s brilliance.

Jon Jones Manager Says He's Not Ducking Rashad Evans

After a whirl wind week for Malki Kawa after rumors began to run wild that his star client, Jon Jones, was ducking his first challenger, Rashad Evans, Kawa went on damage control while talking to MMAJunkie.com this week about the fight, when and if it will happen, and the injury that prevented it from happening:

On Rumors That Jones Is Ducking Evans: "Jon's not ducking Rashad. Jon is willing to fight Rashad. Jon wants to fight Rashad. Jon has no reason to duck him. The only reason he's not able to fight on the timeline that Rashad wants is because his hand is not going to be ready. Surgery or no surgery, his hand is not 100 percent, and there's nothing Jon can do about it."

On Jones' Injury: "In the past, his hand would hurt for a few weeks, but the swelling and pain would eventually go away," Kawa said. "It's completely different this time. It's getting better now, two months after the fight, but he still doesn't have his full strength. Jon never wanted to have surgery. He didn't want to be forced out of the cage for an extended period of time. When Dr. Vahey gave him his opinion – and this guy is the top dog in hand surgeries – when he said he didn't recommend surgery, it was music to Jon's ears. Now he knows he can just rehab it."

On Jones vs. Evans Happening: "From the very get-go, we said we wanted to fight Rashad," Kawa said. "But that always meant fighting in August. We can't do it in August. We always told the UFC it was going to be September or October before Jon would be ready. His hand was hurting, and he needed the time off. Even before he saw a single doctor, we told the UFC September or October would probably be best. The champ will be ready in September or October. That's only a month or two after Rashad's fight with Phil Davis. I can understand not wanting to wait in case something else happens with Jon's hand and the fight has to be delayed more. Rahsad got bit in the ass doing that one time before. But don't tell me that the champ doesn't want to fight you. The champ wants to fight you. Jon hasn't done anything to duck this fight. The only reason people think that is because Rashad said so. Jon's not ducking anybody. If Rashad wants to do October and Dana White's OK with it, let's do it in October. We're ready to rock and roll."
